Magara: We are building team to send Arati home in 2027

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Omingo Magara has said political consultations are underway to build a formidable team to unseat Kisii Governor Simba Arati in the 2027 General Election.

Magara said an emerging political partnership involving former Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and Senator Richard Onyonka is focused on assembling a team capable of defeating the incumbent.

“We are doing consultations and building a team. The ultimate prize for this team is to make Simba Arati a one-term governor,” Magara said on Sunday.

He, however, cautioned against rushing to allocate positions within the proposed political alliance, saying discussions were still at an early stage.

“It is too early to speculate about positions. We are still consulting and putting the team together,” he said.

Magara joked that he could also decide to enter the gubernatorial race himself.

“I can also vie for governor,” he said, drawing laughter from his audience.

He said the emerging team was part of a broader political formation under Jubilee Party and former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, which he said was targeting President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential election.

“We are a big team with the sole aim of making both Arati and Ruto one-term leaders. We want normalcy to return to the country,” Magara told KahawaTungu by phone.

Magara’s remarks came shortly after Machogu, while speaking during a fundraiser at Nyamarambe Catholic Church, appeared to signal a possible partnership involving Magara and former gubernatorial aspirant and KNC party leader Manson Oyongo.

The emerging alliance could reshape the 2027 Kisii gubernatorial contest, which is already attracting several political players seeking to challenge Arati for the county’s top seat.

Magara said more leaders could join the political camp as consultations continue and the group consolidates support ahead of the gubernatorial race.

Machogu has stepped up his political activities as he positions himself for a possible challenge against Arati in 2027, with alliances expected to play a key role in determining the strength of the opposition to the incumbent.

Both Magara and Machogu also criticised what they described as growing political violence in Kisii, warning leaders against using young people to settle political scores.

Magara challenged Arati to take action against what he termed “goonism” and ensure that political competition does not descend into violence.

“Young people should not be used to shed blood in the name of politics. We must reject goonism and ensure that our politics is about ideas and development,” Magara said.

He said Kisii residents deserved a political environment where leaders could compete freely without intimidation, threats or violence.
