Fear and tension have gripped residents of Motonyoni village in Masaba South, Kisii County, after several goats were killed in what locals suspect was a leopard attack during a night raid.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, left at least two villagers counting losses after the mysterious animal reportedly stormed homesteads and attacked livestock before disappearing into nearby bushes.

Residents woke up on Friday to distressing scenes of dead and injured goats scattered around their compounds, with visible bite marks and deep claw injuries suggesting the involvement of a wild predator.

At least four goats were killed during the raid.

“We have never witnessed such a terrifying incident in recent years. The animal attacked silently at night and vanished before anyone could respond,” said Zephaniah Obwogo.

Village elder Charles Tonya said the unknown animal began terrorising the village late Thursday night.

Residents now fear for their safety and that of their children, especially those who walk to school early in the morning.

They also expressed concern over possible further attacks on livestock if the animal is not traced quickly.

Obed Bosire appealed to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to intervene urgently by deploying officers to track and capture the marauding animal.

“We are requesting KWS officers to come and help us because this animal may attack people next. We cannot sleep peacefully,” he lamented.

Area residents suspect the predator may have strayed from nearby forested areas due to human encroachment and shrinking wildlife habitats.

No human injuries had been reported by Friday evening.
