The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) has employed electronic claims processing in their system in the latest update.

The development entails an Electronic Health Management Information System (EHMIS), a web based health information technology that allows health providers to submit claims electronically on behalf of the patients.

“Besides saving time and reducing the claim processing turnaround, this system has also reduced the cost of processing claims by eliminating paperwork, and helped the Fund curb fraud,” said NHIF in a statement.

Announcing the development, NHIF said that they are seeking to limit the use of cash transactions for premium payments by promoting cashless transaction partnerships.

The partnerships will include various banks for cash and check deposits for big organizations while deploying the use of payments through mobile money services for SMEs and individuals.

“The bouquet of benefits available to our customers has also been expanded to include radiology, renal, maternity, surgery, oncology and rehabilitation services,” read the statement in part.

Some of the notable new inclusions to the expanded service include civil servants under the enhanced scheme, former parliamentarians under the platinum package, retired civil servants, the National Police service and the Kenya Prisons service.

“These new systems that result in better efficiency in the delivery of services to NHIF members is currently fitted in all NHIF accredited facilities in Nairobi,” added the statement.
