Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba on Monday urged political leaders to avoid politicising education, warning that partisan attacks risk undermining reforms in the sector.
“Keep politics out of the students. However important your career in politics is, never sacrifice the lives of our young people on the altar of your ego,” he said.
While acknowledging challenges within the Ministry of Education, Ogamba said critics should also recognise the efforts being made to address them.
“We are definitely not idle; work is ongoing,” he added.
The CS was speaking during celebrations marking 66 years of Nyambaria Boys High School in Nyamira County.
He stressed that education policies are informed by professional expertise, not political rivalry.
“Education is a critical pillar of our country’s development and should never be turned into a political battlefield,” Ogamba said.
He welcomed constructive criticism but urged leaders to avoid spreading misinformation that could confuse parents and students.
“There is room for constructive engagement, but let us not mislead the public about what we are already doing to improve the quality of education in this country,” he said.
Ogamba also addressed concerns regarding school uniforms, noting that while issues exist, the ministry is working with relevant agencies to find solutions.
“Something is being done; we are working as a ministry,” he said.
Among the leaders present were MPs Steve Mogaka (West Mugirango) and Clive Gisairo (Kitutu Masaba).
The CS praised Nyambaria Boys for its consistent academic excellence and long-standing reputation for high standards.
“The school has carved its niche by nurturing disciplined, responsible, and well-rounded learners,” he said, commending the administration, teachers, and students for their dedication.
Ogamba reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting schools that demonstrate excellence and holistic development of learners.
He encouraged students to remain focused on their studies and uphold the values that have made Nyambaria Boys a model institution.
During the event, Ogamba pledged Sh100 million towards the completion of a Sh200 million multi-purpose facility currently under construction at the school.
“Nyambaria Boys has built a strong academic reputation and deserves facilities that match its status as a national school,” he said.
Once completed, the facility will accommodate over 8,000 students for examinations, assemblies, and other major activities.
West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka defended President William Ruto, saying the President remains committed to improving the lives of Kenyans.
“Leaders should support initiatives that improve education rather than criticising them for political mileage,” Mogaka said.
Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo assured the school community that the road leading to the institution would soon be upgraded.
“Funding for the road has already been secured, and recarpeting will begin soon to make it more accessible for students, teachers, and visitors,” he said.
School principal Charles Onyari noted that Nyambaria Boys has experienced steady growth over its six-decade history.
“This school has grown from stride to stride, both academically and infrastructurally. Our goal is to continue nurturing students who will make a positive impact in society,” he said, thanking the government, alumni, and local community for their support.
The celebrations brought together students, alumni, teachers, and leaders, all praising Nyambaria Boys High School for its contribution to academic excellence and leadership development in Kenya.
