Patricia Castle Richardson was born on February 23, 1951, in Bethesda, Maryland. Her father was a retired Navy officer and corporate executive, and her family moved several times during her childhood.

She had gone through a divorce and was raising three children. The demanding production schedule had also made it difficult for her to spend enough time with her family.
ABC reportedly offered Richardson $1 million per episode to return for a 25-episode ninth season. The offer would have been worth $25 million for the season.
Tim Allen was reportedly offered $2 million per episode, or approximately $50 million for the season.
Richardson did not accept the $1 million-per-episode offer. Instead, she countered with the same terms reportedly offered to Allen: $2 million per episode and an executive producer credit.
ABC declined the counteroffer, and Home Improvement ended after eight seasons in May 1999.
Richardson later explained that her decision was connected to her role as a mother and her desire to spend more time with her children. She said the show’s long production days meant she was away from her family more than she wanted.
