President Uhuru Kenyattta on Friday hosted Global Teacher Award winner Peter Tabichi at Sate House, Nairobi.

During the visit, President Kenyatta donated Sh20 million to Tabichi’s Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Nakuru County.

The president said the money will be used for the expansion of infrastructure and to encourage students to undertake science subjects.

The president hailed Mr Tabichi for bagging the award saying the win will uplift the teaching profession in the country.

“You have brought honour and pride to the people of Kenya and your win will raise the profile of the teaching profession,” said the President.

He reiterated that the teacher is a role model and an inspiration to the society.

“This is just the beginning, you have become an inspiration and mentor to your colleagues so that they can also aspire to greatness,” he said.

On Sunday, teacher Tabichi was declared the winner of the 2019 Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize, becoming the first African ever to win the award.

The award comes with a price of Sh100 Million, which the foundation said will be paid in batches over a period of 10 years.

Many Kenyans, took to social media to congratulate the teacher for his good deeds that had finally paid off.

Mr Tabichi, a brother in the Catholic church, is said to use 80 percent of his salary to help needy students achieve their dreams in education.
