Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Stephen Isaboke, on Thursday evening joined media professionals and industry leaders in celebrating the 35th anniversary of KTN, Kenya’s first private television station.
Speaking during the event, PS Isaboke said the milestone marks more than just the passing of time, noting that KTN played a major role in shaping the country’s broadcasting industry. He praised the station’s founders and journalists for their vision, innovation and contribution to Kenya’s media growth.
He added that the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy is continuing to roll out the Digital Superhighway and Creative Economy Agenda, which aims to expand internet connectivity to homes, schools and businesses, while creating new opportunities for the media sector through improved broadband access and digital skills.
“We congratulate KTN and the Standard Group for nurturing some of Kenya’s finest journalists and reaffirm the Government’s commitment to media freedom as a cornerstone of democracy, accountability and informed citizenship,” PS Isaboke said.
He urged media houses and journalists to uphold fairness, accuracy and ethics in their reporting to help maintain public trust in the industry.
Isaboke also pointed to the rapidly changing media environment shaped by artificial intelligence, streaming platforms and new digital technologies. He noted that while content remains important, credibility is what continues to determine the strength and influence of media institutions.
He encouraged media practitioners to use emerging technologies such as AI in responsible ways that support authentic and inspiring storytelling.
“As we celebrate 35 years of KTN, let us also look forward to the next 35, where technology and creativity unite Kenyans through integrity, professionalism and patriotism,” he said.
