Police in Nairobi have arrested a man after a dismantled drone and its accessories were intercepted at a cargo company in Eastleigh.
The suspect, Mohamud Hared, was arrested on Friday after he arrived at a cargo company in Eastleigh to collect a parcel that had reportedly been sent from China by a person identified as Abdi Kafi.
The company reportedly became suspicious after noting that the parcel was tightly wrapped in a box and that its contents had not been declared by the sender.
According to the police report, Hared paid for the delivery via M-Pesa and requested that the package be opened.
It was subsequently found to contain a dismantled unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) and several attachments.
The management alerted police, who responded and arrested Hared before taking him to Pangani Police Station for questioning.
Police said the suspect disclosed that the drone was destined for Baled Hawo town in Somalia, reportedly via Mandera, where it was to be collected by Yussuf Abdi Abdille, a resident of the border town.
Hared remains in police custody as investigations continue into the shipment and its intended use.
Such gadgets could be used for terror activities in the area hence the operations to limit their importation. Kenya has been active in stopping the importation.
