    PS Omollo says digital skills are necessary to unlock opportunities

    Digital skills are no longer optional in the society, interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo says.

    He said the skills help in unlocking opportunities at large.

    “Digital skills are no longer optional—they are mandatory,” said Dr. Omollo. “Whether starting an online business, working remotely, or leveraging technology, digital literacy unlocks opportunities.”

    He made the remarks at Oriwo Boys High School in Homa Bay where he joined the community to celebrate the graduation of 290 trainees from the Huawei DigiTruck digital skills training program.

    Dr. Omollo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to digital inclusion. “We will continue to bring digital skills to more communities, empower youth, and foster innovation,” he said.

    He appreciated the support of Huawei and called on more local leaders, businesses, and stakeholders to support
    digital education.

    “Investing in digital education invests in people. Stronger communities mean a
    stronger, more prosperous Kenya.”

    The graduates are expected to drive higher enrollment in ICT courses, increase digital entrepreneurship, and boost digital adoption in rural areas. “We are shaping digital leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers who will help Homa Bay and Kenya embrace the digital future,” Dr. Omollo added.

    The ceremony concluded with a celebration of the graduates’ achievements. “This is not the end—it’s the beginning. You now have the tools to compete, innovate, and thrive in a digital world,” Dr. Omollo told the graduates.

    The DigiTruck program graduated 290 trainees—143 women and 147 men—after a six-week training program.

    Participants gained essential skills to access online job opportunities, grow businesses, and navigate the digital space confidently and safely.

    By bringing digital education to under-served communities, the DigiTruck is bridging the digital divide and empowering individuals to harness technology.

    Since its 2019 launch, the DigiTruck has trained over 6,030 youth across 36 counties, including Trans Nzoia, Kiambu, Nairobi, Uasin Gishu, Marsabit, and now Homa Bay. In 2024 alone, the program trained 1,648 individuals, 906 of whom were women, demonstrating its commitment to gender inclusivity and digital equity.

    Omollo joined Huawei Technologies, Gloria Wawira, CEO of National Youth Council, local leaders and community members at the school for the occasion.

    The program focuses on the digital superhighway and creative economy. Trainees learned computer literacy, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, and online safety, equipping them to thrive in the digital economy.

    The six-week training covered key areas like basic computer literacy, online job opportunities, digital marketing, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship.

    A strong emphasis was placed on online safety, teaching participants to protect personal data, identify scams, and navigate the internet responsibly.

    Government Affairs and Policy Director at Huawei Adam Lane, said In addition to their University Training program with over 60 universities and TVETs, we also run the DigiTruck to reach youth outside formal education and in rural areas.

    “I am proud that we have ensured an equal gender split amongst trainees as digital skills are truly necessary for everyone in today’s economy.”

    CEO of the National Youth Council Gloria Wawira said digital skills will enhance the group’s future prospects.

    “Take advantage of initiatives like Ajira Digital to secure livelihoods and develop your talents.”

    The graduation marks a new chapter for the trainees, with certificates recognizing their skills and empowering them to explore digital entrepreneurship.

    The program also includes an innovation competition, encouraging participants to develop practical solutions for community challenges, fostering creativity and problem-solving.

    Winners came up with ideas to use their digital skills to improve healthcare service delivery; to improve the lives of local quarry workers; and to spread awareness of online safety and cybersecurity.

    A beneficiary, Damada Akinyi said the skills gained, like graphic design and preparing presentations, have opened new doors.

    “I have secured design jobs and earned money as I prepare for university. This training has been invaluable.”
