Raila Odinga Defends Orengo Over Remarks On ODM–UDA Relationship

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has come to the defence of Siaya Governor James Orengo following his recent remarks that sparked debate within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party.

Orengo caused a stir last week when he openly criticized ODM’s growing ties with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), during an event attended by both President William Ruto and Raila Odinga.

“I cannot be a praise-singer. We fought for a democratic Constitution where people should speak freely. I urge Kenyans to tell their leaders the truth,” said Orengo. “If anything is brought to Siaya County, it will be as a matter of right, not as a favour. There is a need to fight for your rights, and you will still have a better country.”

His bold statements triggered mixed reactions, with some ODM members expressing discomfort over his public defiance.

However, ODM Deputy Party Leader and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi defended Orengo, stating that ODM allows freedom of expression within the party.

“Raila Odinga is our party leader, and what he says is what we follow as a party. But we also believe in internal democracy, and what Orengo is doing is simply exercising that freedom,” Osotsi said.

In a statement released on Friday, April 18, 2025, the ODM Party clarified that Raila Odinga is closely monitoring discussions surrounding the party’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The statement added that Odinga is particularly keen on how the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UDA is being interpreted both within and outside the party.

“These discussions are not unique to ODM. Similar engagements have occurred in other strong political parties across established democracies,” the party noted.

ODM also said that its internal organs will review all opinions and eventually settle on a unified position moving forward.

“Odinga appeals to ODM members and leaders to maintain decorum, civility, restraint, and mutual respect as they engage in discussions on the current political situation and the future of the party,” the statement further reads.
