Rescue teams in Thika recovered two bodies from a fire that gutted a mattress factory near BAT Makongeni on December 18, 2025.

The incident happened at Thika Bebe Hope factory.

Authorities confirmed the victims were found during ongoing search operations by firefighters and rescue personnel working to account for all individuals inside the factory at the time of the inferno.

Police said five people were rescued and admitted in hospital while one was treated and discharged.

The fire also affected first responders.

At least three fire fighters who inhaled fumes were treated and discharged while 14 others were accounted for through phone while only two have not been accounted for.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire began following an explosion involving gas pipes, with factory heaters igniting the blaze and causing it to spread rapidly.

“It was an explosion from gas pipes inside the building, and the heaters ignited the fire, spreading it quickly,” one witness said.

Officials confirmed that four victims were admitted to Thika Level 5 Hospital, receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the fire. One patient with more severe burns and injuries was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized care.

The fire generated dense smoke and caused extensive damage to the factory, leaving much of the property beyond repair. Initial firefighting efforts by the Kiambu County Fire Department were bolstered by support from the Murang’a County fire brigade.

The coordinated response helped contain the blaze and enabled recovery operations to continue safely.

One firefighter involved in the operation urged factory owners to prioritize safety by installing emergency exits, emphasizing the importance of providing workers a clear escape route during emergencies.

“I would like to urge industrial owners to install emergency exit doors so that in case of any danger, workers have a way out,” he stated.

Police said there were about six fire incidents that were reported Thursday alone leaving many homeless in informal settlements.
