The body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has arrived in Kisumu aboard a military helicopter, marking a solemn and historic moment for the lakeside city and the nation.

The aircraft touched down at 7:20 a.m. under tight security, with military personnel overseeing the transfer of the casket to Mamboleo Stadium — the designated venue for public viewing.

A short interfaith prayer service will precede the viewing, allowing mourners to pay their final respects in a peaceful and orderly manner. Religious leaders from different denominations will lead prayers before the public is allowed to view the body throughout the day.

Security agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service, have been deployed to ensure order and safety. Authorities have urged mourners to remain calm, observe peace, and honour Raila’s memory with dignity.

The viewing is part of a series of national events celebrating Raila Odinga’s immense contribution to Kenya’s political journey and democracy.

On Friday night, Kisumu residents flooded the city streets in an emotional night vigil, lighting candles, carrying flowers, and singing songs in honour of the late leader as they awaited the arrival of his body.

The public viewing, initially scheduled to take place at Moi Stadium, was moved to Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo following changes in the funeral itinerary.

Raila’s body will later be taken to his rural home at Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, where he will be buried on Sunday beside his late mother at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.

Only close family members and a few invited guests will attend the private burial ceremony, in accordance with Raila’s personal wishes.

Access to Opoda Farm has been restricted, with security heightened around the homestead as preparations intensify.
