Former Sports, Culture and Heritage Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rashid Echesa is noted to have appointed Citizen TV’s Mike Okinyi hours before he was dismissed of his ministerial duties.
Echesa appointed Okinyi as the Media, Broadcasting and Communication Director for the 2020 World Under-20 Athletics Championships.
In what would be his final appointment in the ministry, Echesa also appointed Sports Journalists’ Association of Kenya (SJAK) President Chris Mbaisi to deputise Okinyi.
The two will be part of the organizing committee appointed to host the 2020 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Under 20 Championships.
A gazette notice by Echesa read: “They will be members of the steering committee effective from the 1st January, 2019 for a period of one year and eight months.
“The function of the steering committee shall be to offer the best high-level organizational standards for hosting the world championships in Nairobi: Policy decisions for Government of Kenya, and review the health of the championships at each stage of the lifecycle,” the former CS stated.
The notice further notes that the activities of the Organising Committee shall be funded through the regular Government Budget on a grant basis.
Others who are in the board include: General Jackson Tuwei (Chairman), Michael Agwingi Rabar (Chief Executive Officer), Mary Mwaki (Assistant Chief Executive Officer), Regina Gachora (Chief Operations Officer).
In July 2018, the IAAF council formally endorsed Nairobi as the host city of the 2020 IAAF World U20 Championships.
The sports body affirmed: “By hosting an outstanding final edition of the IAAF World U18 Championships in 2017, Nairobi demonstrated its readiness to take the next step as a championship host.”
