Richard Bland is an English professional golfer born on February 3, 1973, in Burton upon Trent, England.

Nicknamed “Blandy,” he turned professional in 1996 and has built a long career primarily on the European Tour, now known as the DP World Tour, before transitioning to the LIV Golf League in 2022.

Bland gained widespread attention later in his career for his perseverance and late-blooming success, becoming a notable figure in senior golf as well.

He stands approximately 6 feet tall and is recognized for his steady, consistent playing style honed over decades of competition.

    Siblings

Richard comes from a close-knit family and has at least one older brother named Heath Bland.

Heath has faced significant health challenges, including a life-threatening lung condition around 2017 that left him in a coma after what was initially thought to be the flu, followed by battles with bowel cancer and later lung cancer.

Richard has spoken emotionally about his brother’s resilience, dedicating tournament wins to him and describing golf as relatively easy compared to the fights Heath has endured.

    Career

Bland’s professional journey began in 1996 after turning pro, but early success proved elusive on the main tour.

He earned a victory on the Challenge Tour in 2001 by winning the Grand Final, yet it took him until 2019— at age 46—to become the oldest player to graduate from the Challenge Tour back to the European Tour.

His breakthrough came in 2021 at the Betfred British Masters hosted by Danny Willett, where he secured his first European Tour title in a playoff against Guido Migliozzi.

At 48 years and 101 days old on his 478th start, Bland made history as the oldest first-time winner on the tour, sparking a career renaissance that included multiple top-10 finishes and a career-high 11th place on the Race to Dubai rankings that season.

Following this momentum, Bland joined the LIV Golf League in 2022, where he has competed for teams like Cleeks GC and enjoyed greater financial stability and team camaraderie.

The move allowed him to focus more on family and reduced some of the pressures of tour life.

In his senior career, which began around age 50, Bland quickly excelled on the PGA Tour Champions and European Senior Tour.

He claimed two wins on the senior circuit early on and made an immediate impact in major championships upon eligibility.

His playing style emphasizes accuracy and experience, traits that have served him well into his 50s, even as he balances LIV events with senior competitions.

Bland has described how LIV Golf has positively influenced his life, enabling him to play with less financial stress and spend more time with loved ones.

    Accolades

Bland’s most historic achievement remains the 2021 Betfred British Masters victory, marking him as the oldest debut winner in European Tour history.

On the senior stage, he achieved remarkable success in 2024 by winning two senior major championships in his first attempts: the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship and the U.S. Senior Open.

This feat matched a record held by Arnold Palmer for winning the first two senior majors entered.

He has also secured additional wins on the European Senior Tour.

Bland reached a career-best world ranking position in the top 50 following his 2021 resurgence and has earned consistent recognition for his longevity, including multiple Challenge Tour and DP World Tour appearances over more than two decades.

His dedication of the 2024 Senior PGA win to his brother Heath added a deeply personal layer to his accomplishments, underscoring the emotional drive behind his success.
