Security Guard Shot Dead Outside Stima Plaza Amid Nationwide Protests

Tragedy struck this evening outside Stima Plaza, the Nairobi headquarters of Kenya Power, as protests swept across major towns in Kenya.

A security guard, identified as Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, was fatally shot at approximately 4:30 p.m. while on duty at the Kolobot Road entrance of the building.

Mr Wamale, who was employed by Hatari Security, was caught in the chaos as demonstrators clashed with security forces across the city.

According to a statement released by Kenya Power, he was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident unfolded as thousands of Gen Z-led protesters took to the streets to mark the first anniversary of the June 25, 2024 demonstrations.

Last year’s protests, which turned deadly, were sparked by the controversial Finance Bill 2024, and calls for reforms in taxation, governance, and youth inclusion.

Today’s demonstrations were largely peaceful in the early hours but grew tense in the afternoon, with reports of tear gas, injuries, and scattered violence.

Kenya Power expressed its condolences in a statement and pledged to work with investigative agencies to determine the exact circumstances under which Mr Wamale lost his life.

“We regret the unfortunate death of Mr Wamale and are working with the relevant investigative organs to unearth the circumstances under which the incident occurred,” the company said.

As the country reels from yet another life lost during protests, civil society groups have reiterated calls for accountability, peaceful engagement, and the protection of essential workers caught in such unrest.
