Sharon Tate was an American actress and model who had an estimated net worth of $300,000 at the time of her death in 1969, after adjusting for inflation. Court documents valued her estate at approximately $45,400 when she died, equivalent to roughly $300,000 in today’s money.

Tate was one of Hollywood’s most promising young actresses during the 1960s. She began her career as a model before securing television roles and eventually moving into films. Her notable movies included Eye of the Devil, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Valley of the Dolls, Don’t Make Waves and The Wrecking Crew.

Tate married Polish-French filmmaker Roman Polanski in 1968. The couple were expecting their first child when Tate was murdered in Los Angeles on August 9, 1969. She was eight and a half months pregnant at the time.

Because Tate died without a will, her estate was divided equally among her husband, two sisters and parents.

    Early Life

Sharon Tate was born on January 24, 1943, in Dallas, Texas, to Doris and Paul Tate. Her father was a United States Army officer, meaning the family frequently relocated during her childhood.

By the age of 16, Tate had already lived in six different cities. Her frequent moves made it difficult for her to establish lasting friendships.

She attended several schools in Texas, Washington and California before moving with her family to Italy. Tate graduated from Vicenza American High School in 1961.

Her early exposure to different communities and cultures helped shape her interest in entertainment.

    Modeling Career

Tate began entering beauty pageants as a teenager. In 1959, she won the title of Miss Richland in Washington.

After moving to Italy with her family, Tate attracted local attention when a photograph of her wearing a swimsuit appeared on the cover of the military newspaper Stars and Stripes.

Her growing popularity eventually led to opportunities in film.

Tate and several classmates were hired as extras in Hemingway’s Adventures of a Young Man. She also appeared as an extra in Barabbas, which starred Anthony Quinn.

In 1962, Tate returned to the United States with her family and began pursuing entertainment opportunities in Los Angeles.

She secured representation from agent Harold Gefsky, which helped her obtain advertising work and small television roles.

    Television Career

Tate’s early acting work came primarily through television.

She landed small roles on programs including Mister Ed and The Beverly Hillbillies. Although some of her early film auditions were unsuccessful, she continued building experience.

She eventually secured walk-on roles in The Americanization of Emily and The Sandpiper.

These appearances helped establish Tate as a young actress capable of moving from modeling and television into feature films.

    Film Stardom

Tate’s major film breakthrough came in 1966 when she appeared in the British mystery horror movie Eye of the Devil.

She played Odile de Caray alongside established actors including Deborah Kerr and David Niven.

The following year, Tate starred in The Fearless Vampire Killers, a horror comedy directed by Roman Polanski. Polanski also appeared in the film, and their professional relationship eventually developed into a romantic one.

After returning to the United States, Tate starred in Don’t Make Waves.

Her biggest commercial opportunity came with the 1967 film Valley of the Dolls, an adaptation of the bestselling novel. Tate played Jennifer North, an aspiring actress seeking success in Hollywood.

Although the film received mixed reviews, it became an enduring part of 1960s popular culture and helped raise Tate’s profile.

In 1968, she starred opposite Dean Martin in the spy comedy The Wrecking Crew. Her performance received positive attention and strengthened her reputation as one of Hollywood’s emerging young stars.

Tate’s final completed film was The Thirteen Chairs, which was released after her death in 1969.

    Relationship With Roman Polanski

Tate met Roman Polanski while working on The Fearless Vampire Killers.

The two became romantically involved during production and eventually moved in together in London.

They married in London in January 1968 in a highly publicized ceremony.

After returning to Los Angeles, Tate and Polanski became part of a social circle that included numerous prominent figures in Hollywood.

The couple initially lived at the Chateau Marmont before renting a home in Beverly Hills.

In early 1969, Tate and Polanski moved to 10050 Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon after Tate became pregnant.

Polanski was working in Europe while Tate remained in Los Angeles as she prepared for the birth of their first child.

    Sharon Tate’s Murder

On August 8, 1969, Tate had dinner at El Coyote Cafe with Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski and Abigail Folger.

The group later returned to Tate’s home at 10050 Cielo Drive.

During the early hours of August 9, members of the Manson Family entered the property and murdered Tate and the other occupants.

Tate was eight and a half months pregnant.

The killings shocked Hollywood and became one of the most notorious crimes in American history.

Tate was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California, alongside her unborn son.

The Manson Family members were subsequently arrested and convicted for their involvement in the murders and other crimes.

    10050 Cielo Drive

The home where Tate was murdered became permanently associated with the crime.

The original house remained standing for decades after the murders. Musician Trent Reznor later rented the property and used it as a recording location while working on Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral.

In 1994, Full House creator Jeff Franklin purchased the property for approximately $6 million.

Franklin demolished the original structures and built a new mansion on the site. He also changed the address to 10066 Cielo Drive.

The new property later became a high-value Beverly Hills estate.

Sharon Tate’s Family and Victims’ Rights Advocacy

Following Tate’s death, her mother, Doris Tate, became an outspoken advocate for victims of violent crime.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, Doris campaigned against parole for members of the Manson Family and became involved in efforts to reform the American criminal justice system.

After Doris died in 1992, her daughter Patricia continued the advocacy work.

The family later established organizations dedicated to victims’ rights and criminal justice reform, helping transform the tragedy surrounding Tate’s death into a broader campaign for victims and their families.
