A temporary reprieve was granted to Isiolo Senator and Minority Whip Fatuma Dullo by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), which prohibited the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party from making changes to its House leadership.

Last week, Dullo was replaced by Senator Ledama ole Kina of Narok following the changes announced by Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

Tuesday’s announcement of the tribunal’s decision by Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi drew severe criticism from the minority wing, which cautioned the Speaker against disobeying the standing orders.

“Respect of the rule of law and judicial authority are fundamental tenets of our democratic system of governance and, accordingly, I defer the communication pending the outcome of the proceedings before the tribunal,” said Murungi.

Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo told the House that their side was being denied leaders of their choosing.

“What we want as a minority is what we gave you last week and it has taken so long, you are now denying the minority opportunity to have their leaders,” he said.

Nairobi’s Edwin Sifuna on his part said the minority side will not have leaders imposed on them.

Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang said: “Here we can have you as our whip…you can be legal but illegitimate, that is why we say Yes, Ruto is legally the President, but illegitimate in our eyes…”

Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, on his part, said the Speaker should not be party to the proceedings.

“Mr Speaker you’re not party to these proceedings, this is an Azimio divorce, you were not one of the negotiators or party to the negotiations.”

Senator Dullo was ousted after she met President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, at the State House.

She was among the 30 lawmakers from the Jubilee party who held talks with the Kenya Kwanza Alliance leadership.
