A 30-year-old man died after falling into a 100-foot-deep water well while cleaning it at his family compound in Lugose Village, Kakamega East Sub-County.

The deceased was identified as John Brian, a resident of Lugose area.

According to police, the incident was reported at Khayega Police Station at about 12:35pm on October 5, 2026.

Police officers visited the scene and, with the assistance of family members and members of the public, retrieved the man’s body from the well.

Preliminary investigations established that Brian had entered the well to clean it when he slipped and fell to the bottom, where he died.

Crime scene personnel processed the scene before the body was transported to St Elizabeth Mukumu Hospital Mortuary for preservation.

A postmortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death.

Meanwhile, police in Homa Bay arrested three people in connection with a suspected murder in Rangwe Sub-County as investigators intensify efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

The arrests were made as part of a follow-up investigation by officers attached to Ndiru Police Station.

Police have also recovered and secured several items believed to be of evidential value.

They include a red Bajaj motorcycle, a blue 4-by-5-foot mattress with suspected bloodstains and a complete brown wooden bed of similar dimensions, also bearing suspected bloodstains.

Investigators further recovered a grey maize sack and a locally made bed mat, both with suspected bloodstains.

A black Nokia mobile phone belonging to the deceased, fitted with a black cover, was also recovered from a small pink handbag belonging to the deceased’s wife.

The items have been placed in police custody pending further forensic examination.

Investigators are awaiting the postmortem examination and DNA analysis, which are expected to help establish the cause and circumstances of the death and determine whether the bloodstained items are linked to the deceased.

The three suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue, police said on Tuesday.
