Super Metro has issued a statement after one of its matatus was set ablaze by angry boda boda riders along the Thika Superhighway near Juja Town.

The incident happened on Monday evening after the matatu allegedly knocked down and killed a motorbike rider. According to police, the bus was heading to the city centre when the accident occurred. The driver stopped and passengers alighted, but the situation quickly turned chaotic as boda boda riders attacked the vehicle and later set it on fire, causing heavy traffic disruption on the busy highway.

The matatu was destroyed beyond repair. Police officers arrived at the scene minutes later and confirmed that the rider’s body had been taken to the mortuary pending an autopsy, while the wreckage was moved to the local police station. Investigations are ongoing.

In a statement on Tuesday, Super Metro Limited confirmed the incident, saying the accident happened after a tuk-tuk ahead of the bus attempted to change lanes. A motorbike rider overtaking at high speed swerved to avoid a collision but struck a pavement, fell, and was fatally injured by the bus.

“The matter is currently under investigation by Juja Police Station, and Super Metro is fully cooperating with the authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry,” the company said.

The sacco also sent condolences to the family of the deceased. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time. Super Metro remains committed to adhering to all regulatory requirements and supporting the ongoing investigation.”
