Officials from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority are investigating an incident where a suspect died in custody at the Murera police post, Juja, Kiambu County.
Police on duty reported they heard the suspect coughing continuously in the cells while at the report office which prompted them to check on the said suspect namely Benson Mwaniki Wandia, 32.
He had been held for the offence of malicious damage to property v and was to be arraigned before chief Magistrate’s court at Thika on Friday March 6, 2026.
He was found lying on the floor and rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Such cases are investigated by IPOA.
Elsewhere in Karatina, Nyeri County, a man was found dead after a fire incident.
The body of Fredrick Miano Maina, 70 was found burnt beyond recognition inside the house.
The victim was alone in the house when the fire broke out on Friday night. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
The body was moved to the mortuary for other procedures, police said.
In Murang’a County, two people were separately found dead after suspected murder.
The first incident happened in Kangema, Murang’a County a man was found dead in an uncompleted structured house whose owner is yet to be identified.
Police said the deceased had visible deep injuries on both hands and head respectively, suspected to be occasioned by a sharp object. The police are investigating the incident.
In the Kiriaini area, a girl aged 11 was found dead in a pit latrine.
It was established that the unknown juvenile’s body had physical injuries on the head, shoulders and was bleeding from the nose and the mouth.
The body was half naked with a purple top when it was found, police said, adding they were investigating murder.
The motive of the murder was not immediately known.
