A Kibera court on Tuesday allowed police to detain Kithuka Kimunyi Musyimi for 14 days to enable further investigations into the killing of a General Service Unit (GSU) officer who was guarding State House Gate D in Nairobi.

Principal Magistrate Christine Njagi granted the custodial orders after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kilimani filed an application seeking more time to conclude the murder investigations.

According to Inspector Bashir Boya, the investigating officer, the suspect was arrested on October 13 along Dennis Pritt Road near State House Gate D, shortly after the incident.

The court heard that the suspect, who allegedly posed as a street dweller, had concealed a bow and arrows inside a blue sack.

He is accused of shooting Constable Ramadhan Khamisi Matanka, a GSU officer manning a security barrier, injuring him on the left side of the chest.

The officer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he later died while undergoing treatment.

Boya told the court that the suspect has no known place of residence or employment, making him a flight risk.

They argued that his continued detention was necessary to allow the DCI to record statements from witnesses, retrieve CCTV and IC3 camera footage from the scene, obtain call data records, and conduct a mental assessment.

Police also said they are awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of the officer’s death.

The court directed that the suspect be held at Kilimani Police Station pending the completion of investigations.

The officer died out of excessive bleeding, an autopsy conducted on his body showed.

The autopsy on the body of Ramadhan Khamis Matanka showed an arrow that had been shot went through the left 7th and 8th rib then went through the left lung and it also punctured the heart.

The exercise was conducted at the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary in the presence of the family and police.

Ramadhan was buried in Kajiado County.

A group of human rights activists who were present demanded justice for the killing.
