At least three fishermen died, while another one was injured after a collision between a fishing boat and a ship on Lake Victoria near Remba Island in Suba North constituency, Homa Bay County.
The deceased were identified as Fredrick Odhiambo, Pascal Oluoch, and Wickliffe Mino, all from Sindo Main Beach in Suba South constituency.
They were on a fishing expedition when the incident occurred late Wednesday night.
The chairman of the Homa Bay County Beach Management Unit (BMU) Edward Oremo said the fishermen’s boat was struck by a ship traveling from Uganda to Kisumu while the four men were asleep after casting their nets.
The impact caused the boat to split into three parts.
“The section of the boat carrying the three fishermen sank, and they drowned as they were unable to swim,” Oremo said.
He added that the surviving fisherman managed to cling to another section of the boat until he was rescued by fellow fishermen.
Oremo indicated that the ship may not have switched on its headlights to alert the fishermen, which could have contributed to the tragedy.
A search operation was launched to recover the bodies of the deceased.
Police said the matter is under investigations.
Two other fishermen were Monday killed in an attack by a hippopotamus in Samia, Busia County.
The two were Ugandans who were fishing in the area. Their bodies were recovered and handed over to Uganda.
