Tragedy struck a school in Kisumu Town when a grade two pupil died while playing at their merry-go-round.
The eight-year-old girl fell and injured her head leading to profuse bleeding that left her dead on Thursday August 28 evening, police said.
Police and witnesses said the pupil at Arena Primary School was with other colleagues playing at about 3 pm on an iron six-seater merry-go-round when she accidentally fell off. And after falling off, she was hit by the same rotational seats that were on motion leaving her with serious head injuries. She was identified as Pauline Akinyi.
She was rescued and rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to the injuries, police and witnesses said.
Police later visited the scene of the incident as part of the probe into the same.
The body with an injury in the back of the head was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
The incident threw the school community into a sombre mood. On Friday, her seat was empty as other pupils reported to class amid mourning.
Meanwhile, police arrested a woman wanted for murder of her husband in Aliwa estate, Kondele area.
The woman was arrested in Kahawa Wendani area, Nairobi on Wednesday and escorted to Kisumu for murder. This was in connection with the murder of her husband Joach Mosi on July 10, 2025 in the same area.
She escaped the scene and went to Nairobi where detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters arrested her.
Police said she will face murder charges after she was driven to Kondele for further processing.
The couple had fought in the house when the woman stabbed and killed the man and escaped.
Such murder incidents have been on the rise amid efforts to solve them.
