A male patient was found dead after suspected suicide in an isolated ward at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), Eldoret.

Police said the body of Enock Kisuru, 48 was found hanging on a window grill after a suspected suicide on Saturday February 15 afternoon.

He is said to have used his clothes to hang himself at an isolated male ward. The matter is under investigation and comes weeks after a patient went missing from his ward at the facility before his body was found on the riverbanks near there.

MTRH officials told police Kisuru was admitted there on January 14, 2025 with bipolar type one complications.

On Saturday, he became violent to other mental patients at the ward, which forced the management to contain and take him to a secure room therein.

When the officials went to check on him an hour later, they found him dead.

He had apparently hanged himself using pieces of clothes. It was then police were called to the scene for processing.

The body was moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Mortuary awaiting postmortem.

It comes days after a patient vanished from the facility before his body was discovered in a river in the area.

The cancer patient had been admitted at the facility on December 15, 2024 but disappeared from there few days later, officials said.

On January 29, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital management notified Naiberi Police Station that the patient had gone missing from the ward.

Following the report, authorities conducted a search for the missing patient.

The search lasted two weeks, and on Sunday, February 9, the patient’s decomposing body was discovered on the banks of the River Sosiani, just 200 meters from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

According to investigators, the deceased was located wearing civilian clothing and had been attacked by dogs.

The matter is still under probe and a number of officials have been questioned over the same, police said.
