Uganda Orders Suspension Of 3 NBS TV Staffers Who Aired Bobi Wine’s Protests

NBS TV has been ordered by the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) to suspend three of its staffers involved in airing Kyadondo East MP Robart Kyangulanyi alias Bobi Wine’s protests.

The UCC executive director Godfrey Mutabazi wants NBS TV managing director to fire within three days the head of news Joyce Bagala, Chris Wanobere the progammes manager and producer Canary Mugume.

The station, through the three employees, are accused of “misrepresentation of of information, views, facts and events in a manner likely to mislead or cause alarm to the public during the live broadcasts and main news bulletins.”

NBS also faces accusations of holding extremist or anarchic messages which incited violence for political purposes.

Ugandan government has been accused of censoring the media for airing content propagated by the opposition.

Wine was recently arrested and detained following a protest he led, triggering more protests by his supporters.

TV stations that aired the protests live were ordered to stop it immediately.

Subsequent protests received no coverage as stations seemingly started censoring themselves in fear of the government.

Wine was charged with disobedience of statutory duty, an offence prosecution says he committed in July 2018.

He was charged alongside his brother Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, one David Lule, Edward Sebufu and other who is still at large for leading an illegal protest contravening section 116 of the Penal Code Act.

“David Lule, Katongole Julius, Nyanzi Fred Ssentamu, Sebufu Edward, Robert Kyagulanyi and others still at large on July 11, 2018 at City Square Kampala road in Kampala District disobeyed sections 5 and 10 of the Public Order Managemnet Act 2013 by holding a public meeting without giving notice to any authorised officer, holding a public meeting a public meeting without adhering to the required criteria and refusing to coordinate and cooperate with police with police to ensure that all participants are unarmed and peaceful,”the charge sheet

Bobi Wine will remain in custody until May 2 .
