Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has offered the strongest hint yet that he may have been battling cancer, as he paid tribute to his close friend, Frank Ireri, who died from the disease.
Speaking during Ireri’s funeral on Friday, October 31, Uhuru shared that Ireri had been a great source of support to him over the past two years. While he did not directly confirm that he has cancer, he said the two had gone through similar health struggles and often encouraged each other.
“I don’t know whether I should say this, but these are the realities of life,” Uhuru said. “For the better part of last year and this year, he encouraged us through the challenges we were going through. He had more experience, so he guided us on how to handle such issues.”
He described Ireri as a friend who offered him strength, advice, and hope during difficult moments.
“I will miss that counsel. I will always appreciate how he held our hand and told us not to worry, that all this will pass,” he added.
Uhuru also spoke about accepting the journey of illness and life’s uncertainties. He said those still fighting health challenges should continue with courage, but when the time comes, it should be embraced with peace.
“The reason Frank is lying here is because it is his time,” he said. “Those who have these challenges, we continue fighting. But when it is God’s time, we shall join him and be thankful for the life we lived and the moments we shared.”
Rumours about Uhuru’s health began earlier this year after he reduced public appearances. His bald head and occasional shortness of breath during speeches led to speculation that he might be undergoing treatment.
His political allies dismissed the claims at the time, calling them unfounded. In recent months, Uhuru has increased his public engagements and has appeared stronger and more energetic, including leading the Jubilee Party’s National Delegates Conference.
