A chef recognised at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is facing murder charges following the death of his wife in an incident on campus, according to law enforcement authorities.

Jeffrey MacDonald, who had earned the title of “Chef of the Year” at the university, was arrested on Wednesday evening after police responded to reports of an emergency at a hotel located within the campus.

Authorities say MacDonald is accused of killing his wife, Emma MacDonald, inside the hotel room. According to a police report cited by The Boston Globe, the suspect allegedly told investigators he used multiple means, including physical force and objects, during the attack and indicated intent to kill.

Police were called to the scene at approximately 7:40 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, officers reportedly encountered resistance, with MacDonald allegedly throwing objects and striking one officer during a confrontation before he was subdued and taken into custody.

Emma MacDonald was found unresponsive in the room and was pronounced dead at the scene.

MacDonald appeared before the Eastern Hampshire District Court on Thursday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges including murder and assault and battery.
