Kenyan long-distance runner Beatrice Chebet is set to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters from the University of Kabianga in recognition of her outstanding achievements in athletics and her contribution to society.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Vice-Chancellor Professor Eric Koech said Chebet has shown exceptional talent and discipline on the global stage, cementing her place among the world’s greatest athletes.

Chebet is a double gold medalist, having won both the 10,000m and 5,000m races at the 2024 Summer Olympics and the 2025 World Athletics Championships. She is also the current world record holder in the 5,000m, the 5km road race, and the 10,000m.

“She is a role model and a mentor to many and has represented the country on numerous international platforms. Her story promotes the values of hard work, resilience, excellence, ethical sportsmanship, professionalism, and patriotism,” said Prof. Koech.

Chebet, who hails from Saramek Village in Londiani, Kericho County, has also been nominated for the World Athlete of the Year 2025.

The university noted that Chebet’s journey from a rural upbringing to becoming a global champion has inspired many young people.

Her achievements, the statement said, highlight the power of determination and continue to elevate Kenya’s image in international athletics while encouraging women to pursue opportunities in sports.

The honorary degree will be conferred during the University of Kabianga’s 13th graduation ceremony scheduled for Friday, November 14, 2025.

Beatrice Chebet was born on March 5, 2000, to Francis and Lilian Kirui.
