    Born in September 1952 in Srinagar, Kashmir, Vidhu Vinod Chopra developed a passion for cinema at an early age. He pursued his education in filmmaking at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). His student short film Murder at Monkey Hill won the National Film Award, setting the stage for his illustrious career.

    Career

    Chopra made his directorial debut with the 1978 documentary An Encounter with Faces, which earned critical acclaim. In 1981, he wrote and directed Sazaye Maut, marking his entry into mainstream filmmaking. Over the years, he established himself as one of India’s most influential filmmakers, creating a series of iconic films that left a lasting impact on the industry.

    • Khamosh (1985)
    • Parinda (1989) – A crime drama that gained cult status
    • 1942: A Love Story (1993) – A romantic film set against India’s struggle for independence
    • Kareeb (1998)
    • Mission Kashmir (2000)

    Apart from directing, Chopra made a name for himself as a producer, backing critically and commercially successful films such as:

    • Munna Bhai MBBS (2003) – A comedy-drama that became a cultural phenomenon
    • Parineeta (2005) – A period drama that earned widespread appreciation
    • Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) – A sequel that popularized the concept of “Gandhigiri”
    • Eklavya: The Royal Guard (2007)
    • 3 Idiots (2009) – One of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time
    • Ferrari Ki Sawaari (2012)
    • PK (2014) – Another blockbuster that became the highest-grossing Indian film at the time

    In 2015, he expanded his horizon beyond Bollywood, writing, directing, and producing Broken Horses, a Hollywood thriller. He also produced Wazir (2016), starring Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar.
