Gunmen shot and killed a man aged 18 in an attack in Aroo area, Turkana County.

Police said the incident happened on Sunday evening amid rising tension in the area over persistent attacks by gunmen.

The shooting happened Kalomwai sub location and left one Locheli Etabo dead. He was shot on the right side of his head as he fetched water at a watering point.

The attackers escaped the scene without stealing anything from the deceased. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

The incident came as multi agency teams were deployed to the area to address rising cases of gun attacks by gunmen roaming there.

The teams have been deployed in different groups to coordinate the operation and tame further attacks, police said on Monday.

In Kokuro, Kibish, Turkana County, a 15-year-old boy was shot and injured in the leg in an attack.

Police said the victim was grazing livestock at a water point within the said area when he saw three people approaching and firing at him.

One bullet hit his right foot. The attackers believed to be from the neighbouring country Ethiopia escaped the scene as members of the National Police Reserve responded.

The team rushed the boy to the hospital pending other operations to tame retaliations. The area is among those under Operation Maliza Uhalifu aimed at dealing with bandits.

The operation has managed to contain crime in the area and other counties amid persistence. The operation targets Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru and Isiolo counties.

Besides retributive reaction, strategic investment and sustainable development have also taken a prominent place among the government’s planned crime control interventions for Kenya’s Northern frontier and the Kerio Valley belt.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the long-term vision is to empower the communities to actively take part in the war against animal rustling and undertake legitimate nation-building activities.

He said plans to distribute subsidized agricultural inputs and extension services to area residents in a bid to revive farming activities as a source of livelihood.

Murkomen ordered fresh vetting for all National Police Reservists (NPRs) as part of efforts to bolster the operations.
