    Early Life

Born Edward Michael Grylls on June 7, 1974, in London, England, he spent his early childhood in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, before moving to the Isle of Wight at the age of four. His father, Sir Michael Grylls, introduced him to climbing and sailing from an early age. As a teenager, Grylls pursued skydiving and earned a second-degree black belt in Shotokan karate.

He attended Eaton House, Ludgrove School, and Eton College, where he co-founded the school’s first mountaineering club. Grylls later studied Spanish and German at the University of West England and the University of London, graduating in 2002 with a degree in Hispanic studies. Following graduation, he embarked on a trekking expedition in the Himalayas of West Bengal and Sikkim.

    Military Service and Near-Death Experience

From 1994 to 1997, Grylls served in the British Army reserves as a trooper, receiving specialized training in survival, climbing, explosives, desert and winter warfare, and unarmed combat. He was twice stationed in North Africa as a survival instructor. However, his military career was cut short in 1996 when he suffered a near-fatal parachuting accident in Kenya. A malfunctioning parachute caused him to plummet to the ground, breaking three vertebrae. Following months of rehabilitation, Grylls made a remarkable recovery and went on to accomplish one of his biggest dreams—climbing Mount Everest.

    Television Career

Grylls’ television career began with a deodorant commercial featuring his ascent of Mount Everest. In 2005, he starred in Escape to the Legion, a four-part series in which he and other participants underwent a re-creation of the French Foreign Legion’s desert training. However, it was Man vs. Wild that propelled him to global stardom. The show, which saw him surviving in some of the harshest environments on the planet, became a massive success.

Following the end of Man vs. Wild, Grylls expanded his television presence with several other series, including:

    • Bear Grylls Wild Weekends
    • Bear Grylls: Breaking Point
    • Bear Grylls: Survival School
    • The Island with Bear Grylls
    • Running Wild with Bear Grylls

In 2012, Grylls had a contractual dispute with Discovery Channel, leading to his departure. However, he returned to television in 2014 with Running Wild With Bear Grylls on NBC, a celebrity survival show that has featured guests like Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, and Barack Obama.

In 2020, Amazon Prime released The World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji, a 10-episode series hosted by Grylls. The show followed 66 teams from 30 countries competing non-stop for 11 days across 416 miles of grueling terrain in Fiji.

Grylls has also expanded into digital media, launching The Bear Grylls Digital Network in 2020. This platform focuses on adventure and outdoor lifestyle content aimed at younger audiences through social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.

    Books

Beyond television, Grylls is a prolific author with over 15 books to his name. His works include:

    • Six books detailing his survival adventures
    • The Mission Survival series, a collection of five children’s adventure books
    • Two thriller novels
    • Soul Fuel, a book exploring his Christian faith

He has also penned motivational and leadership books, further expanding his influence beyond television.

    Personal Life

In 1998, just 18 months after his severe parachuting accident, Grylls reached the summit of Mount Everest at age 23. His sister, Lara Fawcett, gave him the nickname ‘Bear’ when he was just a week old, a name that would later become world-famous.

Throughout his career, he has engaged in multiple charitable activities, serving as an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust and supporting organizations like Global Angels. In 2008, he set a Guinness World Record alongside double amputee Al Hodgson and Scotsman Freddy MacDonald for the longest continuous indoor freefall in a vertical wind tunnel.

    Real Estate

Grylls owns a private 20-acre island off the coast of Wales, U.K. The island, which lacks electricity and running water, offers stunning sea cliffs, abundant wildlife, and a remote escape from modern life. Despite his global fame, Grylls maintains a deep connection to nature, choosing to live a life of adventure and self-reliance.
