Christy Martin is an American former professional boxer and promoter who has a net worth of $500,000. Widely regarded as the first female boxer to achieve mainstream fame in the United States, Martin played a central role in bringing women’s boxing into the national spotlight during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” she built a career defined by power, resilience, and historic televised fights on major platforms such as Showtime and HBO. Her rise under promoter Don King helped transform her into one of the most recognizable female athletes of her generation, opening doors for future stars in women’s boxing.

In November 2025, her life story reached an even wider audience with the release of the biographical film “Christy,” starring Sydney Sweeney. The film chronicled her rise in boxing, her turbulent personal life, and her survival after a near-fatal 2010 attack.

    Early Life

Christy Salters was born on June 12, 1968, in Mullens, West Virginia. Raised in a working-class coal-mining community, she developed a competitive spirit early in life through basketball and track at Mullens High School.

She later attended Concord College in Athens, West Virginia on a basketball scholarship, where she studied education. It was during her college years that she was introduced to boxing through local “toughman” competitions. Her early success in these bouts revealed her natural fighting ability and set her on the path to a professional boxing career at a time when women’s boxing had little recognition.

    Professional Boxing Career

Martin turned professional in 1989 and quickly earned a reputation for toughness and knockout power. After building an early winning streak, she caught the attention of legendary promoter Don King, who signed her in the mid-1990s.

Her breakthrough moment came on March 16, 1996, when she fought Deirdre Gogarty on the undercard of Mike Tyson vs. Frank Bruno in Las Vegas. The nationally televised bout was a brutal six-round battle that captivated audiences and is widely credited with bringing women’s boxing into the mainstream.

Following that fight, Martin became a media sensation, appearing on the covers of major publications and becoming the first female boxer to sign a major promotional contract. Between 1995 and 2000, she defeated top opponents including Mia St. John, Lisa Holewyne, and Belinda Laracuente, often by knockout, cementing her reputation as a dominant force in the ring.

    Championships

Christy Martin held the WBC super welterweight title and was named Ring Magazine Female Fighter of the Year in 1998. Over her 23-year professional career, she compiled a record of 49 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws, with 31 knockouts.

She became one of the first female boxers to regularly headline or appear on major pay-per-view and televised fight cards, earning six-figure purses at her peak—an extraordinary milestone for women’s boxing at the time.

In 2020, Martin was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, solidifying her legacy as one of the sport’s pioneers.

    Personal Life

Martin’s personal life was marked by both success and severe hardship. She married her trainer, Jim Martin, in 1989, but the relationship became increasingly abusive over time.

In November 2010, she survived a brutal attack in which she was stabbed and shot in her Florida home. Despite life-threatening injuries, she managed to escape and reach help, surviving what prosecutors later described as an attempted murder. Jim Martin was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Following the incident, Martin publicly opened up about her struggles and later came out as gay. She eventually married former opponent Lisa Holewyne, finding stability and support in her later life.

    Later Career

After briefly returning to boxing, Martin retired in 2012 and transitioned into promotion and advocacy. She founded Christy Martin Promotions, focusing on developing young fighters and expanding opportunities for women in boxing.

She also became a motivational speaker, using her platform to raise awareness about domestic violence and to inspire survivors through her personal story of recovery and resilience.

    “Christy” Biopic

In November 2025, Martin’s life was dramatized in the biographical film “Christy,” starring Sydney Sweeney. The Lionsgate production portrays her rise from small-town fighter to world champion, her abusive marriage, and her survival after the 2010 attack. The film received attention for its emotional storytelling and for highlighting Martin’s pioneering role in women’s boxing.
