    Early Life

Fatlip, whose real name is Derrick Stewart, was born on March 26, 1969, in Los Angeles, California.

Before gaining recognition as a rapper, he was active in the local dance scene during the late 1980s under the name Jammer D. His early involvement in dance culture introduced him to future collaborators and helped shape his artistic identity.

    Rise With The Pharcyde

Fatlip rose to fame as a member of The Pharcyde, formed in 1991 alongside Imani, Slimkid3, and Bootie Brown.

The group signed with Delicious Vinyl and released their debut album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde in 1992. The project received widespread critical acclaim for its playful style and unique approach to hip-hop.

The album featured the hit single “Passin’ Me By,” which became a defining track of the era and topped the Hot Rap Songs chart. Over time, the album gained classic status and helped shape the West Coast alternative hip-hop movement.

In 1995, the group released their second album, Labcabincalifornia, which included popular tracks like “Drop” and “Runnin’.” The album reached the Billboard 200, further solidifying their reputation.

However, in 1997, Fatlip was removed from the group following internal conflicts, marking a turning point in his career.

    Solo Career

After leaving The Pharcyde, Fatlip eventually launched his solo career.

In 2005, he released his debut solo album The Loneliest Punk, which showcased his introspective and unconventional style. One of its standout tracks, “What’s Up, Fatlip?”, gained additional exposure through its inclusion in the video game Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland.

Over the years, he collaborated with a wide range of artists, including:

    • The Chemical Brothers
    • Portugal. The Man
    • Blu

In 2012, he reunited with Slimkid3 for the collaborative album Love, reconnecting with his Pharcyde roots.

    Recent Work

Fatlip remained active in music through collaborations and independent releases.

In 2022, he released his long-awaited second solo album Torpor, marking his return after nearly 17 years. The project included singles such as “Dust in the Wind,” “Wake Up,” and “My Bad,” the latter featuring all original members of The Pharcyde.

In 2023, he followed up with a live album, Live from the End of the World, further showcasing his continued presence in hip-hop.
