    Early Life

Jean-Claude Camille François van Varenberg was born on October 18, 1960, in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels. He began practicing martial arts at age 10, enrolling in a Shotokan Karate school. By 18, he had earned a black belt in karate. He also studied Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and ballet, which contributed to his fluid, athletic fighting style.

In his late teens and early twenties, Van Damme won several championships and the bodybuilding title Mr. Belgium. At 21, he ran a profitable gym in Brussels, earning $15,000 per month, before selling it to pursue a career in the United States.

    Martial Arts Career

Van Damme competed nationally and internationally, joining the Belgian Karate Team at age 12. Between 1976 and 1980, he recorded 44 victories and 4 defeats in semi-contact tournaments. In full-contact competitions, he tallied 18 wins and 1 loss before retiring in 1982. His martial arts expertise laid the foundation for his film career.

    Hollywood Breakthrough

Van Damme moved to the U.S. in 1982 with just $3,000 and limited English skills. He worked as a bouncer and limo driver before landing bit parts in films like Monaco Forever (1984) and Breakin’ (1984).

His major breakthrough came with 1988’s Bloodsport, filmed on a $1.5 million budget, which earned $50 million in the U.S. alone. This launched a string of action hits in the late ’80s and early ’90s:

    • Kickboxer (1989)
    • Cyborg (1989)
    • Double Impact (1991)
    • Universal Soldier (1992)
    • Nowhere to Run (1993)
    • Hard Target (1993)
    • Timecop (1994)

Van Damme’s early film salaries rose steadily, from $25,000 for Bloodsport to $8 million for Street Fighter (1994), totaling roughly $40 million in pre-tax earnings between 1991 and 1995.

    Career Challenges

Despite his early success, Van Damme struggled with substance abuse and was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder, causing a career slump in the late ’90s. Many of his projects went direct-to-video, but he eventually returned to prominence with films like JCVD (2008) and The Expendables series, re-establishing himself as a respected action star.

    Directing

Van Damme has directed and produced several films, including The Quest (1996) and Full Love (2014). He has also appeared on television, notably guest-starring on Friends in the episode “The One After the Superbowl.”

    Personal Life

Van Damme has been married five times to four women and has three children. He battled a costly cocaine addiction in the mid-1990s, reportedly spending $10,000 per week at his peak.

    Real Estate

In 2012, Van Damme purchased a $6 million mansion in Marina Del Rey, California, featuring six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a home gym, rooftop garden, and spa. He sold the property to rapper Ice Cube in 2016 for $7.25 million. He now primarily resides in Hong Kong, owning an apartment on the 75th floor of a luxury building.
