Woman Challenger in Kisii Gubernatorial Race Pledges Health and Infrastructure Reforms

A female aspirant in the Kisii County gubernatorial race, Dr July Nyanchama, has pledged to overhaul the county’s health and infrastructure sectors if elected in the 2027 General Election.

Dr Nyanchama becomes the second woman to declare interest in a gubernatorial seat in the Gusii region, a political landscape historically dominated by male candidates. In neighbouring Nyamira County, Woman Representative Jerusha Mogaka has already announced her bid for the top county seat.

Speaking from Rome during an interview with Kawatungu on Monday, Dr Nyanchama said access to quality healthcare remains one of Kisii County’s most pressing challenges.

“Too many of our people continue to suffer because our hospitals lack drugs, equipment and adequate staffing. This is unacceptable in 2027,” she said.

She cited poor facilities, understaffing and shortages of medical supplies as key obstacles to effective service delivery, pledging that her administration would prioritise upgrading public hospitals and health centres across the county.

“My focus will be to fix our hospitals, ensure consistent availability of medicines and provide dignified working conditions for healthcare workers,” she said.

Dr Nyanchama also committed to strengthening maternal and child healthcare, stressing that preventable deaths must be eliminated.

“No mother should lose her life while giving birth, and no child should die from preventable conditions,” she said, adding that her leadership would enhance referral systems and expand healthcare services to remote areas.

On infrastructure, the aspirant promised large-scale development, particularly in road construction and maintenance.

“Poor roads have stifled our economy, denied farmers access to markets and slowed service delivery, especially in rural areas,” she noted, adding that improved road networks would open up the county for trade and investment.

She further pledged to improve Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres, saying strong foundations in education are vital for long-term development.

“If we get education right at the foundation level, we secure the future of Kisii County,” she said.

Her plan includes investing in modern learning facilities, employing qualified ECDE teachers and ensuring safe and conducive learning environments for young children.

Dr Nyanchama said strategic investments in health, infrastructure and education would drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for Kisii residents.

She called for unity and inclusive leadership, pledging transparency and collaboration with all stakeholders to deliver people-centred and sustainable development.

“Together, we can build a healthier, better-connected and more prosperous Kisii,” she said as she urged voters to support her bid.
