A woman was admitted in hospital in serious condition with two bullet wounds in a failed suicide mission in Kyuso, Kitui County.

The woman is said to have been a girlfriend to a senior police officer at the Kyuso police station. The officer said he left his Jericho pistol loaded with ten bullets in a suitcase in his house and left for a local shop for shopping on January 7, 2026 evening.

He also left the woman in the house while sleeping. While on the way back, he heard gunshots from his house, he told police.

He knew something was wrong in the house and sought help from his colleagues.

They rushed to the scene and found the woman sprawled on the floor in a pool of blood and with bullet wounds.

She had allegedly shot herself from behind on the left-hand back with the bullet exiting on the left side of her stomach.

Police secured the weapon from her and realized the house had two bullet holes on the wall. One cartridge and bullet head were found on the mattress.

The victim was rushed to Kyuso Sub County Hospital where she was further transferred to Mwingi Sub County Hospital for a specialized treatment while in critical condition. The motive is suspected to be a love triangle, which was a dispute that is pending at the Kyuso police station.

Police said they are investigating the incident.

Police statistics show up to five cases of suicide are at times reported daily in the worrying trend.

Most of the victims are men, statistics show.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.

The government says efforts are being made to address the menace.
