A 35-year-old woman killed her two young children before burying them in a shallow grave before she died by suicide in Todonyang area, Turkana County.

Police said the incident happened in Nachukui area, on Sunday October 26, 2025.

The woman identified as Hellen Akai strangled her two boys aged four and two before she buried them in a shallow grave.

She later hanged herself in her house, police said. The motive of the incident was not immediately established.

Police were informed of the incident hours later and arrived at the scene before removing the bodies to the mortuary.

The team is investigating the incident.

Such cases have been on the rise amid efforts to solve them.

Last week, a man poisoned and killed his two young girls before he died by suicide in a village in Suswa, Narok County.

Police said the suspect identified as Nahashon Mbogo fed his two daughters aged six and four with a redcat poison. The remains of the poison were found in the house, police said.

After feeding the children with the poison and they had died, he laid them on bed.

He then hanged himself in his house in the October 21, 2025 incident.

The motive of the incident was not immediately known.

Police statistics show up to five cases are at times reported daily in the worrying trend.

Most of the victims are men, statistics show.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.

The government says efforts are being made to address the menace.
