One worker died while two others were rescued after a tragic incident at a construction site in Athi River East Sub-county, Machakos County.

According to police, the incident occurred on April 18, 2026, at around 3:30 p.m. at a building under construction along Faith Road in the Githunguri area.

Police officers who responded to the scene established that three workers had entered an underground septic tank in an attempt to drain water that had accumulated following heavy rains.

Authorities believe the workers lost consciousness due to lack of oxygen while inside the confined space.

The building owner reportedly noticed the situation and quickly alerted members of the public, who rushed to assist in rescue efforts.

During the operation, Antony Njoroge was retrieved from the septic tank but was already dead. The two other workers, were successfully rescued and rushed to Haven Hospital in Ruai, where they were admitted in stable condition.

Police processed and documented the scene, noting that the deceased had no visible external injuries. The body was later moved to Mama Lucy Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.

The incident highlights the dangers associated with confined spaces at construction sites, especially in the absence of proper safety measures. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, two women were arrested after being found with a mobile phone that was robbed from a muder victim.

This followed the murder of Michael Ochieng Mitalo on March 8, 2026 in Kosele, Homa Bay County.

The women were arrested in the area on April 18 following an investigation. One of them was found with the deceased mobile phone- an Infinix- and took detectives to the one who sold her the gadget.

A prime suspect is in custody over the murder of the man and another one who is on the run is being sought, police said.

The two women were taken to custody for interrogation and further processing.
