Mona Barthel is a professional German tennis player born on 11 July 1990 in Bad Segeberg, West Germany.

She turned professional around 2008 and has competed primarily on the WTA Tour and ITF Circuit.

Raised in a sports-oriented family, she began playing tennis at the age of three after being introduced to the sport by her relatives and was inspired by fellow German Steffi Graf.

Her mother, Hannelore, holds a PhD, while her father, Wolfgang, is a doctor who previously excelled as a European junior shot-put champion.

Barthel has cited hard courts as her preferred surface, though she enjoys competing on all surfaces, and she has represented Germany in team events including the Fed Cup and the Olympics.

    Siblings

Mona has one older sister, Sunna Christina.

Sunna likewise pursued tennis and competed at the professional level before a shoulder injury forced her to stop.

Mona followed her sister into the sport from a young age, starting to play at three because Sunna was already involved.

    Career

Barthel launched her professional career on the ITF Circuit in 2007, securing her first title in 2010 at a $10,000 event in Wrexham.

She progressed steadily, capturing multiple ITF singles titles and making her WTA main-draw debut in subsequent years.

Her breakthrough came in 2012 when, as a qualifier, she won her first WTA singles title at the Hobart International.

The following year she claimed a premier-level title at the Open GDF Suez in Paris (indoors), defeating Sara Errani in the final, and also reached the final in Hobart as the defending champion.

In 2014 she added the Swedish Open title in Båstad, and in 2017 she captured her fourth WTA singles crown in Prague as a qualifier.

In doubles she has won three WTA titles, partnering Sabine Lisicki in Stuttgart in 2013, Laura Siegemund in Luxembourg in 2015, and Anna-Lena Friedsam in Stuttgart in 2019.

She has also collected additional titles and deep runs on the ITF and WTA Challenger circuits.

Barthel’s career-high singles ranking of world No. 23 was achieved on 18 March 2013; her doubles peak was No. 63 in September 2015.

She has competed in all four Grand Slams, with her best singles result a fourth-round appearance at the 2017 Australian Open.

Injuries, including periods of illness and a foot issue, have interrupted her progress at times, yet she has continued to compete into her mid-thirties, returning to lower-tier events and occasionally qualifying for WTA main draws.

    Accolades

Barthel’s primary accolades include four WTA singles titles (Hobart 2012, Paris Indoors 2013, Båstad 2014 and Prague 2017) and three WTA doubles titles.

She has reached three further WTA singles finals and one doubles final.

On the ITF Circuit she has won multiple singles titles (sources note at least five to eight depending on the count of later events) and additional doubles success.

She represented Germany at the 2012 and 2021 Olympic Games and played for the national Fed Cup team, notably contributing in 2013.

Her career prize money exceeds $4 million, and she has recorded several victories over top-10 opponents.
