His parents, Alexander Zverev Sr. and Irina Zvereva, are both former professional tennis players who represented the Soviet Union before relocating to Germany in the early 1990s.

He made his professional breakthrough as a teenager, winning his first ATP Challenger title in 2014 and reaching an ATP Tour semifinal in Hamburg that same year at age 17.
