Global leaders, including India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema, have sent heartfelt condolences following the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Odinga, 80, died in India after suffering a heart attack while receiving treatment at the Koothattukulam Sreedhareeyam Ayurveda Hospital in Ernakulam. According to medical officials, he collapsed during a morning walk and was rushed to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, where he was pronounced dead. His body has since been preserved at the hospital as the family prepares an official statement.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Raila as a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.

“I had the privilege of knowing him closely since my days as Chief Minister of Gujarat, and our association continued over the years. He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom. This was reflected in his efforts to strengthen India-Kenya ties,” Modi said.

He added that Raila’s admiration for India’s traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda, was deeply personal.

“He particularly admired Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems of India, having witnessed their positive impact on his daughter’s health. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and to the people of Kenya in this hour of grief,” Modi said.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema hailed Odinga as a fearless voice for justice and a lifelong advocate for democracy.

“Raila was a towering advocate for democracy, a fearless voice for justice, and an unwavering servant of the people. His journey inspired generations across our continent,” Hichilema said.

“In honoring his memory, we celebrate his many contributions — from advancing constitutional reforms and championing inclusive governance to fostering dialogue in times of crisis. His legacy will endure,” he added.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan mourned Raila as a courageous and peace-making leader, sending condolences to the government and people of Kenya.

“Kwa niaba ya Serikali na Wananchi wa Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania, ninatuma salamu za pole kwa Rais wa Jamhuri ya Kenya, Mheshimiwa Dkt. William Samoei Ruto, Mama Ida Odinga, watoto, familia, ndugu, jamaa, marafiki na wananchi wote wa Kenya kwa msiba huu,” President Suluhu said.

Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013 under the Grand Coalition Government, was one of Africa’s most influential political figures and a symbol of resilience and reform across the continent.
