Zac Brown, born Zachry Alexander Brown on July 31, 1978, in Atlanta, Georgia, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician.

As the co-founder and lead vocalist of the Grammy Award-winning Zac Brown Band, he has carved a niche in country music with a distinctive blend of country, bluegrass, and rock influences.

Raised on Lake Lanier by his mother, Bettye, and stepfather, Dr. Jody Moses, a dentist in Cumming, Georgia, Brown grew up in a large family environment that fostered his early love for music.

His exposure to various genres, from classical guitar to bluegrass, shaped his versatile musical style.

Beyond his work with the Zac Brown Band, Brown has explored other ventures, including co-founding the electronic dance music group Sir Rosevelt and releasing a pop album titled The Controversy in 2019.

A philanthropist and entrepreneur, he has also founded Camp Southern Ground, a nonprofit camp, and Southern Ground Nashville, a recording studio.

    Siblings

Zac is the second youngest of twelve siblings, making him part of an expansive and musically inclined family.

While specific details about most of his siblings remain private, it is known that his brother Wynn Brown is a bluegrass guitarist and banjo player, influencing Zac’s early affinity for the genre.

The siblings were raised together in Georgia, with Zac spending his formative years in Cumming and later Dahlonega, where music played a central role in family gatherings.

His father, Jim Brown, also contributed to this musical environment by playing folk guitar, and Zac often joined his father and brother Wynn for bluegrass sessions during weekend visits.

    Career

Brown’s musical journey began at age eight when he started learning classical guitar, a skill he honed for two years before diving into bluegrass, inspired by family jam sessions.

By his mid-teens, he was performing solo gigs at local venues, covering country and pop songs, which laid the groundwork for his professional career.

In 2002, he founded the Zac Brown Band, initially a trio with a drummer and bassist, which evolved into a full ensemble featuring musicians like Jimmy De Martini, John Driskell Hopkins, Coy Bowles, and others.

The band’s breakthrough came with their 2008 album The Foundation, which included the hit single “Chicken Fried,” achieving 5x platinum status with over five million copies sold.

Subsequent albums like You Get What You Give and Uncaged further solidified their success, blending traditional country with diverse influences.

Brown’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Southern Ground Artists, his own record label, in 2003, and later Southern Ground Nashville, a recording studio.

His ventures extend beyond music, including Southern Grind Knives and a brief investment in Z Brown Distillery.

    Accolades

The Zac Brown Band won a Grammy Award in 2013 for Best Country Album with Uncaged, a testament to their innovative sound.

They have also secured multiple nominations and wins from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association, with Brown himself being a nine-time American Music Award nominee.

The band’s chart success includes 16 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs or Country Airplay charts, 13 of which reached number one, showcasing their dominance in the genre.

In 2017, Brown received the CRS Humanitarian Award for his philanthropy, particularly for his work with Camp Southern Ground, which supports children with neurodevelopmental challenges and veterans transitioning to civilian life.

Their albums, including The Foundation (triple-platinum) and You Get What You Give and Uncaged (both platinum), underscore their commercial and critical success.
