Raised on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, McGowan grew up in a family of Irish and Russian Jewish descent, with his father, Vincent, a former U.S. Marine, and his mother, Brenda, employed at United Airlines.

His screen debut came in 2006 as Jackson in the direct-to-video war film The Hunt for Eagle One, followed by its sequel, The Hunt for Eagle One: Crash Point.
In 2007, he appeared on the reality show Two Dudes Catering and made his scripted television debut as Kurt Greenfield in an episode of CSI: Miami.
McGowan’s breakthrough came in 2011 with his role as Jody Silverman, a tattoo artist with a complex personal arc, in Showtime’s Shameless, transitioning from a guest star in season two to a series regular in season three.
