The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) in partnership with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and corporate organisations, have launched the Haiti Disaster Fund to raise funds towards a humanitarian appeal to assist millions of people affected by an earthquake that hit Haiti, claiming more than 50,000 lives and living millions of others homeless.

The fund was launched on 15th January 2010 in Nairobi during a press conference. The Secretary General of KRCS, Abbas Gullet, noted that the international community has supported Kenya during various disasters and people of all walks of life should come up to assist Haitians during this tragic moment.

The ICRC’s Head of Regional Delegation, Christoph Luedi, informed the media that the Committee had dispatched staff to Haiti, and more support was on the way. He also announced the launch of a family links web link www.icrc.org/familylinks to help reunite families affected by the earthquake disaster. The link has also been posted on the National Societies websites.

Kenya’s corporate institutions, through the General Manager of General Motors Ltd, pledged to support the appeal through donations to an MPESA account opened by the Safaricom Company Ltd.

The KRCS Goodwill Ambassador, Gina Din Kariuki, commended the Safaricom Ltd for donating the MPESA services to the fund. She appealed to members of the public and other well-wishers to make their contributions through the MPESA account below:
