Police have in custody a suspect in the killing of National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) manager, Lilian Waithera.

According to Nairobi Police Commander Mr Adamson Bungei, the suspect has been identified as Julius Kimani Mwangi.

The 46-year-old was shot last week along Kaunda Street, Nairobi as she walked home from work. The deceased was in the company of a friend when she suddenly dropped on the pavement.

Her friend, Damaris Ochieng’, said the deceased complained of chest pain. She was bleeding from the nose and mouth when she suddenly collapsed.

“We were walking side by side. She just stopped and asked me to call for her an ambulance then fell down,” Ms Achieng said.

The incident took place at around 5.30 pm, with the first responders arriving at 5.58 pm. They declared her dead at the scene.

It was not until a postmortem was conducted that it was discovered that Waithera had been shot. The pathologist found a bullet in her lungs.

“The female NHIF staff who collapsed and died along Kaunda Street on Monday evening had been shot from an elevated angle. Autopsy revealed the bullet was lodged in her lungs,” said the police last week.

“The bullet entered through the collar bone, having been fired from an elevated angle.”

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei explained that the shot was fired by someone who was on top of one of the high-rise buildings in the area.
