2017’s top KCPE candidate (from a private school)has scored 455 marks out of a possible 500 marks compared to last year’s top pupil who got 437 marks, CS Education, Dr Fred Matiang’i has announced.

Coming in second is a candidate from a public school.

Releasing this year’s results at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), the CS noted there were no examination malpractices reported in the country.

9,846 pupils scored 400 marks and above, an improvement from 2016’s 5,143. He also pointed out that the number of pupils with less that 100 marks dropped significantly by 4,000.

The examinations were marked in a record 19 days thanks to optical machines valued at Sh100 million, said CEO KNEC, Prof George Magoha. He also said that the machines offered 99.98 per cent accuracy.

Matiang’i has also assured parents that children with 400 marks and above will be placed in national schools whether one was in a private or public school.

The placement, he said will be done before December 12.
