Connecting a gas stove is a task that should always be approached with caution. Whether you’re installing a new stove or reconnecting one after moving, safety must be your top priority. Gas appliances can be dangerous if not handled properly, so if you’re not confident, it’s best to call a certified gas installer. However, if you’re experienced and local regulations allow DIY connections, this guide will help you understand the process. Here is how to connect a gas stove.

    1. Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before starting, make sure you have the following:

    • Flexible gas hose (SABS-approved or compliant with local standards)
    • Gas regulator (usually for LPG cylinders)
    • Hose clamps or compression fittings
    • Soapy water in a spray bottle (for leak detection)
    • Adjustable spanner or wrench
    • Gas stove and gas cylinder
    1. Ensure Safety First

Turn off the gas supply completely before doing anything. Make sure the area is well-ventilated. Check that all knobs on the gas stove are in the “off” position to prevent accidental gas flow when connecting.

    1. Connect the Hose to the Stove

Attach one end of the flexible gas hose to the stove’s gas inlet. Use the spanner to securely tighten the fitting, ensuring a snug and leak-proof connection. If your stove has a threaded connector, make sure the thread size matches your hose fitting.

    1. Connect the Hose to the Gas Cylinder

Connect the other end of the hose to the gas regulator attached to your gas cylinder. Again, ensure the fitting is secure using a spanner. Use clamps if needed. Double-check that the regulator is properly fixed to the cylinder valve.

    1. Test for Gas Leaks

Open the gas cylinder valve slightly and spray the connection points with soapy water. If you see any bubbles forming, there is a leak. Tighten the connections and test again. Never use a flame to test for leaks.

    1. Light the Stove Safely

Once you are sure there are no leaks, turn on one of the stove’s burners and ignite it. Depending on your model, this might be via a built-in igniter or manually with a lighter. Observe the flame— it should be steady and blue. A yellow or flickering flame may indicate a problem.

    1. Secure and Monitor the Setup

Ensure the gas hose is not kinked or touching any hot surfaces. It should be positioned safely and away from high heat or sharp edges. Regularly check the connections for wear or leaks.
