A nine-year-old girl drowned in an open sewer line that had water in the Mihango area, Nairobi County.

Police said the incident happened in Utamu estate on Monday, October 6, 2025, in the evening.

The girl was playing with other children when she slipped into an open sewer line that is under construction in the area at an open field.

The girl was a pupil at Mihango Junior Primary School.

The trench had water from the rains that had been experienced in the city, which caused the death, police and locals said.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Police said they are investigating the incident even as locals called for action on those behind the sewer line which was left without any caution.

Elsewhere in Athi River, Machakos County, a woman aged about 30 collapsed and died as she walked in the area.

Police said the woman had said she was looking for a missing friend before she collapsed and died.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending identification and autopsy.

In the Likoni area, Mombasa, a man died after being assaulted by his friends in a disagreement over money.

This was out of a deal that went sour, police said.

The man was rushed to the hospital where he died. Police said they are looking for the suspects behind the incident and that the body is lying in mortuary pending an autopsy.

And a train hit and injured a man in Mwiki area, Nairobi.

The victim was crossing the railway line in the Githurai-Mwiki area when he was hit and sustained a fractured left leg. The right leg was amputated and was rushed to the hospital.

Police said the victim was rushed to the hospital and admitted in critical condition.

Such incidents have been on the rise amid a campaign to address the same.
