Detectives are investigating an incident where the body of a 34-year-old man who had been missing was found in a borehole in the Mtondia Maweni area, Kilifi County.

The family of Samuel Kithi had reported he was missing on October 20, 2025 in the morning before the body was discovered in the borehole, police said.

The victim had an injury in the head and it is suspected he sustained the same during the fall into the borehole. It is not clear if he was killed and thrown there, fell by accident or he died by suicide.

Police said they are investigating the incident. The body of the man was retrieved and taken to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

Meanwhile, police in Turkana are investigating the fatal shooting of a 30-year-old man by unknown gunmen in an attack.

The incident happened on Monday in Kapelbok village and involved one James Ereng.

The perpetrators are said to have vanished through the nearby bushes after the incident.

A multi-agency patrol team was later dispatched to comb the area as the body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

Police suspect the attackers were armed bandits roaming the area.

The area is among those under Operation Maliza Uhalifu aimed at dealing with bandits.

The operation has managed to contain crime in the area and other counties amid persistence.

The operation targets Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Elgeyo Marakwet, Meru and Isiolo counties.

Besides retributive reaction, strategic investment and sustainable development have also taken a prominent place among the government’s planned crime control interventions for Kenya’s Northern frontier and the Kerio Valley belt.

There is also an ongoing deradicalization process among the rustlers. This has prompted some of those handling the illegal arms in Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo Counties to surrender them and so far more than 300 weapons have been recovered, police say.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the long-term vision is to empower the communities to actively take part in the war against animal rustling and undertake legitimate nation-building activities.

He said plans to distribute subsidized agricultural inputs and extension services to area residents in a bid to revive farming activities as a source of livelihood.

Murkomen ordered fresh vetting for all National Police Reservists (NPRs) as part of efforts to bolster the operations.
