President William Ruto has congratulated Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election following the October 29, 2025 general election.

In a statement on Monday, President Ruto said Kenya and Tanzania share strong historical ties and common aspirations through the East African Community (EAC), and expressed hope that the two countries will continue working together to promote peace and development.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Kenya, and on my own behalf, I extend sincere congratulations to Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election,” Ruto said.

The election was marred by protests in several parts of Tanzania, with reports indicating that several people may have died. There were also claims that the government restricted internet access during the unrest.

Ruto urged Tanzanians to remain calm and embrace dialogue to resolve political differences.

“I call upon the patriotic people of Tanzania to uphold peace and the rule of law. I encourage all political actors and stakeholders to embrace dialogue and tolerance to safeguard democracy and stability,” he said.

Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye and Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud were among the first African leaders to congratulate Suluhu.

Ndayishimiye wished Suluhu success in her new term, saying Burundi looks forward to continued cooperation for shared development. President Mohamud said Suluhu’s victory reflected the confidence of the Tanzanian people and expressed Somalia’s readiness to strengthen bilateral ties.

Meanwhile, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf urged respect for human rights following reports of violence during the post-election period.

In a statement, Youssouf expressed regret over the reported loss of lives and offered condolences to the affected families. He said the AU was ready to support Tanzania in maintaining peace and national unity.

He also called on Tanzanian authorities to protect fundamental freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly and expression, and reminded citizens to exercise their rights responsibly.

“The African Union reaffirms its commitment to the principles of democracy, human rights, and respect for the rule of law,” Youssouf said.
